Epidemiological Investigation of Rabies Suspected Animal Bites In Ahar town, 2009-2010

Abstract

Background and objectives : The incidence of animal bite in Ahar town is about 3 times more than national average which represents the essence of a comprehensive study in this regard. Findings of different animal bite aspects could be helpful in health programs and reduction of its burden.

Material and Methods : This retrospective descriptive study was conducted using the data of referred patients to rabies treatment centers in Ahar during 2009-2010. The variables included demographic factors, place of residence, time, anatomic location of the bite and type of animal. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.

Results : A total number of 1492 rabies cases during a two-year period shows the incidence of bites are about 3 times of national average and 2.5 times of province rate .The mean age of individuals was 28, men were bitten 4 times more than women and rural residents were bitten 2.5 times more than urban residents. The highest frequency was among men with age group of 16-25 years and women with 5-10 years. Most of the injured were students. Lower extremity with 66% of bite had the highest rate. Among the invasive animals, 91.2% were dogs and 96.5% were the owned animals.

Conclusion : The findings of this study showed that the incidence of animal bite in Ahar town is several times higher than the national and provincial average. Because of the importance of this issue, in order to control and prevent this health problem, serious attempts are necessary to be made by the involving offices and organizations.
